12/22/97: Two of Asian Arts most well-known galleries, John Eskenazi Ltd. and Rossi & Rossi, have both been updated with new objects.
12/05/97: A new article, Bangladeshi Arts of the Ricksha written by Joanna Kirkpatrick and featuring photos by the author and Kevin Bubriski outlining the history and development this colorful and diverse "people's art".
11/28/97: One of Asian Arts' first galleries, Traders of the Lost Arts, has just been updated with all new material.
10/14/97: New Area. Asian Arts is pleased to officially open the Classified Section, where visitors can buy and sell Asian arts and crafts. This new section alllows you to post your own item directly, and includes the facility to refer to a picture. For a preliminary testing period, the service is entirely free.
10/9/97: Featured Exhibition: Tibet: Tradition and Change, opening to the public on Oct. 18 1997 (through January 17, 1998, at the Albuquerque Museum. This large exhibition, selected by Dr. Pratapaditya Pal, incorporates important works previously unseen.
10/4/97: Asian Arts is pleased host the Gateway Gallery of Himalayan Antiques, featuring fine Tibetan painted furniture, wooden artifacts, textiles and ethnic jewelry.
9/15/97: An interesting article "About two bamboo carving artists" posted in the Forum section, contributed by Yoshitaka Takaki, Japan
8/31/97: Asian Arts is sponsoring the web site of another worthy project, The Tibet Heritage Fund Lhasa Archive Project, which seeks to preserve and restore old buildings in the old city of Lhasa.
8/13/97: Asian Arts is delighted to welcome Fitzwilliam Ltd. to our galleries. Fitzwilliam President Andrew Rogers has specialized in Tibetan and other Indo-Asian antiques since 1972.
8/11/97: Jewel of Lotus has updated their gateway gallery on Asian Arts with several new items.
8/11/97: Asian Arts has expanded the home page to accommodate a new main section, Associations. Over the past year, it has been our pleasure to be able to host the sites of various important institutions, associations and projects. Pages from many of the Associations sites will also be listed under exhibitions or articles and can be accessed from either section. Check this section to see updates from Museums, scholarly institutions and research, preservation and restoration groups.
8/10/97: Asian Arts is honored to host the site of the newly opened Patan Museum, where a lovely collection of Himalayan treasures is housed in a delightful compound which combines the medieval spirit with a resepectful but innovative modern restoration and adaptation.
8/04/97: For those interested in the works of contemporary traditional artists from India, the Dak Ltd. Gallery site has been updated with all new work.
6/15/97: Emil Mirzakhanian of Milan opens a gateway gallery in Asian Arts, featuring fine Asian sculpture, carpets and works of art.
6/04/97: Kathmandu Portfolio + 1 is a new exhibition of photographs of scenes from Kathmandu, 1970-1974, by Ira Cohen, photographer and poet. The photographs are accompanied by his Kathmandu Dream Piece.
5/28/97: One of Asian Arts' first galleries, John Eskenazi, Ltd., has been completely redesigned and updated with new material.
5/06/97: Asian Arts is proud to welcome our newest on-line gallery site, Joseph G. Gerena Fine Art, specializing in Fine Ancient, Tribal, and Ancient art and artefacts.
4/04/97: A new gallery, Shamballa Architectural Antiques, featuring the finest examples of antique teak doors, carved sacheen (walnut" windows, and other exotic hard-wood imports.
3/25/97: The Tharu of the Tarai, an exhibition brings to the public's view for the first time the material culture of the Tharu, the indigenous population of Nepal's lowlands along the Indian border; by Kurt W. Meyer and Pamela Deuel.
3/14/97: Jewel of the Lotus, a new gallery added, featuring in fine Asian antiquities, sculptures, paintings and fine works of art.
2/10/97: Creating a Tibetan Renaissance, Profile: Nyima Tsering, Sichuan, China by Pamela Logan, in the Forum.
2/10/97: Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, a review by Eric J. Hoffman, in the Forum.
2/6/97: The Asian Arts Bookstore opens. The bookstore is divided into two sections, the Book Kiosk, where specialty books are sold, including the exhibition catalogues of several of the exhibitions featured on Asian Arts. The Asian Arts/Amazon.com bookstore features lists of books in various areas selected from the Amazon.com lists.

1/16/97: DAK Ltd. , Asian Arts newest gallery, specializes in importing and exhibiting the works of contemporary traditional artists from India, who work to preserve the miniature styles of the past.
1/4/97: James Singer a well-known dealer of fine Asian Art based in London, opens his gallery site on Asian Arts. Featured are fine Indian, Nepalese and Indonesian sculpture.
12/23/96: Peaceful Wind has extensively updated their Tibetan furniture gallery on Asian Arts.
12/7/96: Peaceful Wind has extensively updated their galleries in Asian Arts. Gallery 1 contains fine Himalayan Sculpture, while Gallery 3 is new gallery with objects of various types, primarily from the Himalayas.
11/30/96: Early Portrait Painting in Tibet, by Jane Casey Singer. The most thorough treatment of the subject to date, with 25 illustrations.
11/13/96: China Exploration & Research Society Monastery Project: an article by Pamela Logan with wonderful photographs outlining the Society's ongoing efforts to save some of the last intact monasteries on the eastern plateau of Tibet.
10/25/96: Eskenazi extensively updates it galleries with a selection of fine pieces from Tibet and the ancient buddhist kingdom of Gandhara.
10/14/96: Splendors of Imperial China: Treasures from the National Palace Musuem, Taipei. An unsurpassed survey of Chinese art treasures from one of the greatest collections in the world will be on view at The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco from October 14 to December 8, 1996. Then the exhibition will conclude its historic U.S. tour at The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. from January 27 to April 6, 1997.

7/10/96: A Kushan-period Sculpture from the reign of Jaya Varma-, A.D. 185, Kathmandu, Nepal: by Kashinath Tamot and Ian Alsop. An important article on a recent discovery in Nepal which pushes back Nepalese epigraphy and art history to the second century A.D.
6/30/96: New in Forum: Francince Sliwka, TWO ASPECTS OF SERINDIAN ART: SERINDIA, WHERE ETYMOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY MEET, comments by Francine Sliwka a propos the exhibition shown at the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais in Paris until February 19, 1996, and subsequently exhibited in Tokyo: Serindia, Land of the Buddha: Ten Centuries of Art on the Silk Road.

4/27/96: Kathmandu University Department of Music, A Short Introduction, by Gert-Matthias Wegner. Wegner, renowned in the Kathmandu Valley for his skills in traditional Newar Music, introduces us to the newly formed Kathmandu University and its Department of Music. Illustrated with some lovely black and white photographs of Newar musicians.
4/18/96: Asian Arts introduces a new section, Forum, where visitors can submit essays, long letters or reviews. Also, the Departments page brings together various areas of the journal for easier access.
3/17/96: Rossi and Rossi have extensively updated their galleries, with sections on their offerings at the Maastricht Fine Arts Fair, and the International Asian Art Fair, New York.
3/12/96: Rupert Smith Textiles A new gallery specializing in antique Tibetan carpets and textiles.
2/26/96: Kathmandu Valley Paintings by Robert Powell. An on-line exhibition.

1/18/95: Recent Awards Asian Arts has been rated in the Top 5% of all web sites by Point. We have also received a 3 star rating and top review from The McKinley Group-Magellan. We are very proud of these awards and will continue to improve Asian Arts to better meet your needs.
12/21/95: New Look for Asian ArtsWe have added several important new features, including Search, which allows you to search our site according to keywords of your own choice; the Letter Board, a new interactive mail system; and for visitors with the latest browser version, Frames.
