Subject:potter identification
Posted By: Tony Mon, Jul 26, 2021 IP: 96.67.237.254

Hi this may be difficult but I am giving it a try. Could anyone please help to identify this Japanese Bizen potter? The cursive kanji handwriting is very hard to decipher and also the cross mark under the base is no where to be found!
Thanks in advance.

Right side,
好陽造 - Kōyō-zō - Made by Kōyō

Nanba Kōyō Ceramic artist in Bizen (Okayama)

Signature in the middle,
豊臣贈姓 - Family name given by Toyotomi*
大饗五郎左衛門 - Ōae Gorozaemon
十六代香處 - 16th gen. Kosho
Seal,
香處 - Kosho (Art-name)

* Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Japanese daimyo 1536-1598)

The vase was made by Namba Koyo, but the box was inscribed and marked by the 16th gen. Oae Gorozaemon (Keio and early Meiji era potter)

amazing thanks! I can't find much of anything on Namba Koyo. I assume he is a modern potter? Any info on him would be awesome. So I guess it was made by him but collected by the other 16th generation potter? there is a cross shape mark under the vase too,

Meantime, I have found a fragmentary information about Namba Koyo (難波好陽). He was a Bizen ware craftsnan, born in 1902 ? Maybe it is not correct.
I can't see the relation between him and the 16th gen. Oae Gorozaemon. 50 years of age difference is too much.
On the other hand I either can't find any exact biographical data abouth the 16th ge, Oae.

With regards,
I.Nagy
