Subject:Is this Japanese art?
Posted By: Tom Sat, May 20, 2023 IP: 172.56.49.80

Does anyone know what culture this art piece is from? Japanese? And what this art form is called?
Thank you for your time.

This is a Burmese-style of couched tapestry called "Kalaga", which typically show various figures drawn from the Buddhist religion or local deistic demigods and legendary beings. Yours may illustrate a Ramayana dancer.

On the downside, your example appears to be a Thai reproduction made at one of the many factories devoted to copying ancient arts and crafts of the region. I visited there many times during my six years with the US Mission in Thailand during the 1980s. Many like yours were seen during visits to the large night market there.

Here's a picture of a couple of antique ones in my collection.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you for graciously dedicating your valuable time to assist me with the Kalaga picture. Having seen your photos, I must say, your collection of Asian art is truly impressive. I greatly admire it.
