Subject:Chinese Bronze Censers
Posted By: Gee Cee Thu, Jan 13, 2022 IP: 1.43.165.170

Hi guys,
I was hoping to get some information on two old censers that I have.
The square one (with faces on all four sides) appears to be gilt bronze, and has an old repair on one of the corner decorations.

The round one has a nice rich patina. It has a strange rectangular repair (possibly) in one of the shields.

I have no idea of their age or anything else about them, so any info would be appreciated.

I'll upload some additional pics.

The pictures of your square censer show a pastiche of features meant to suggest designs found on some Shang and later Chinese bronze-culture vessels. The results of the effort are so grotesque as to suggest the piece wasn't made in China but perhaps Thailand or elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

The round vessel has what looks like a Japanese patina but is rough around the edges and at best dates probably to around the second quarter of the 20th century,

Best regards,

Bill H.

Your rectangular bronze is a modern imitation of the famous Da He fangding (大禾方鼎), an ancient Chinese bronze ding vessel from the late Shang dynasty unearthed in Tanheli, Ningxiang, Hunan in 1959. The original is on display in the Hunan Museum (information from Wikiwand).
