The artist is the Osaka print designer Kunikazu (国計). The print depicts the actors Nakamura Tomosa II (1795-1862) in the role of Shimizumura Jinzaemon and Nakamura Daikichi III (1815-1857) as the daughter Otaka in the play 'Katakiuchi ninin gappô', performed at the Naka theatre in Osaka, 9th month 1856.

The Osaka printmaker Kunikazu (国計, active 1856-58) must not be confused with Utagawa Kunikazu (歌川国員, active 1848-1868), also working in Osaka.
