Subject:Chinese Dish Poem Translation Help
Posted By: Steve Gridley Wed, Oct 25, 2023 IP: 71.166.55.44

I need help in translating the poem on this dish. Sorry I could not get better photos. I'm guessing it dates from the last quarter of the 19th century.

Perhaps I.Nagy can provide a more literary version of the inscription, meanwhile the painting shows Li Taibai (701-762). According to info in the Georg Weishaupt catalog, "The Great Treasure" (2002), Li entered the Imperial Hanlin Academy at age 25 but rejected the intrigues of the palace the following year and went on to rank among the most famous of Chinese poets.

The style of this decoration is called "wushuangpu" in China and depicts the myths and legends perpetuated in Chinese art and literature. Li appears by himself on this dish but more often is the centerpiece among other Chinese heroes in such painted porcelain. See downloaded images below of a Daoguang-era dish.

Best regards,

Bill H.
