Subject:Chinese Painting - Xu Beihong Herdboy
Posted By: Pickles Mon, Jun 19, 2023 IP: 198.27.235.88

Does this painting by Xu Beihong appear to be authentic?

When I look up closed auctions for similar paintings, the colors often look more muted compared to my Dad’s collection. Not sure if it’s the photography … I use an iPhone 14 Pro and notice that it takes very clear, slightly vibrant pictures.

Adding to my own post … I found a closed Sotheby’s auction of the same/similar painting - the stokes are lighter, smoother. In my version, strokes appear heavier and chunkier 😵‍💫 Also, in my novice thinking, did artists really paint the exact same layout and details? I would think that would be boring as heck to try and re-do the same scene 🤷🏻‍♀️

its no so easy.
compositions are done several times! if the painting is exactly alike its bad. but your painting is not the the exact same composition, the viewer is moved into the shade of the tree and it all makes sense. Size is different too.
coloration could be different. colors could be affected by photos and by condition, in fact the auction reports discoloration.

This one got approved by Christie's specialists after seeing it in person. Very thrilling to watch the experts evaluate it.

An update on this one that I wanted to share. It is a Xu Beihong, but wasn't accepted by Christie's ... they were thoughtful in providing reasons for their decision. It was viewed as perhaps the artist having a "bad day" with this painting.

oh, he certainly had a much better day than he painted the 3 horses!
