Probably an image cast in India of a Buddhist monk meditating with hands joined in the lotus position. Its facial features are similar to the one shown below found on eBay, but I am not a bronze expert in this area and can't vouch one way or the other for the accuracy of the description, although yours appears to have legitimate signs of use.

Thanks Bill H. for the reply. The latest theory is that it's a Jina from a house altar in the Jain religion. But that of course doesn't solve the mystery about how old it is ...
