Subject:Large Japanese vase.
Posted By: Jane Thu, Feb 23, 2023 IP: 151.210.167.113

Hello,
Would someone please tell me the type of pottery and approximate age of this Japanese vase? Is it Edo or Meiji?
Thank you.

Looks like it might be a late Meiji-Taisho (ca 1900-1925) vase depicting the mythical "Demon-Queller" Shoki (Zhong Kui in China). The red writing on the foot may be a factory notation but I'll defer to others in this case. Also some dim impressions on the foot that may be characters, along with a dark outlined rectangular area like a stamp might make, none readable.

Best regards,

Bill H.

According to gotheborg.com, Moriage slip-decorated wares were produced in Japan from the end of the 1800s to the mid-1900s.
