Subject:What are these stone sculptures?
Posted By: Kasia Tue, Feb 21, 2023 IP: 128.232.195.137

Hi, I have these 2 (I think they might be book ends) made out of Shoushan stone? I am not sure what do they show/represent or what period they can be from? Can anyone help? What would be their value?
Thank you.
K

I believe these are Chinese carvings.
The one on the right is depicting guanyin the goodness of mercy.

Dear Mark,
Thank you for your reply. What do you think about the one on the left? do you know how to determine their age?
Thank you.
Kasia

I believe that the one on the left is also Quan Yin. She has a lotus flower and stem. I hope that someone else can help to date them.

The vase is an attribute of the immortal He Xianggu, identified as the only female among the Eight Immortals.

In Chinese Buddhism, Guan Yin is synonymous with the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. Bodhisattvas may exhibit a feminine appearance but on the way to enlightenment have lost all traces of gender, the source of lust.

Best regards,

Bill H.
