Subject:Porcelain Buddha Info and Mark Translation
Posted By: Rich Sat, Feb 18, 2023 IP: 69.249.127.237

Hi,
I was hoping to get some info (origin, date, mfg, etc) on the porcelain Buddha shown in the attached photos.
I believe this figure was obtained by my great-grandfather during a visit to China in the early 1900s.
This figure is approx. 7.5" tall and there is an impression / marking on the underside.
Hoping the close-up pic of the marking will aid in translation.
Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!
Kind regards,
- Rich

Look's Republic period 1912-49.
The Hessian effect on the base was a common feature.

The mark appears to read from right to left as "Zhu Maosheng" (朱茂盛) although the last character is a bit unclear. During the late 19th-early 20th century, Zhu Maosheng was a prolific source of porcelain images like yours, representing the "Budai Heshang" or "Cloth Sack Monk", Also called the Happy Buddha", an avatar of the Bodhisattva or Mortal Buddha Maitreya.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks Mark and Bill!
Attached is another photo showing the mark / impression.
I zoomed in and adjusted the contrast a bit.
Maybe that will help confirm the artist / maker as Zhu Maosheng.
Thanks again!
- Rich

No doubt the ‘sheng’ character.
