Subject:Xuantong black Lacquer foot
Posted By: David C Tue, Jan 17, 2023 IP: 80.41.152.108

Dear Forum
I read a message thread in this forum that I cannot seem to find again. I remember it being quite an argument and many years past. I clipborded some text luckily.

"Allen's second book (p206) describing a practice of adding black lacquer to the bottom of certain Guangxu-Xuantong era vases".

Can anyone explain why this would be? Seems an odd practice. I have included the foot I'm interested in below especially when we are looking for fotts with toothpaste white rims generally. I am unsure if it is mark and period. 20th century, well excecuted mark but I am not proficient enough and I have not held the piece.

Many thanks in advance
Best wishes
David

There's precedent as well for such foot rims seen on the below-pictured vase and also illustrated in the Mainland China-published 'Compendium of Marks on Historical Chinese Ceramics' (Zhongguo Lidai Taoci Kuanzhi Dadian - 中国历代陶瓷款识大典), where they are dated t the Kangxi reign (1662-1722).

Best regards,
