Subject:Any guesses about this dish?
Posted By: John Thu, Jan 05, 2023 IP: 216.93.214.103

My last few posts have gotten no replies, so here’s another attempt. Don’t expect this one to be old or valuable. The leaves are also slightly sculpted with bumps so surface isn’t totally flat. No one I’ve shown it to could read the script.

Your dish is Japanese arita ware.
The mark is from the kanji characters of kenryu-nen-sei which equates to the Chinese Qianlong period 1736-95.
I don't think your bowl is that old. It's from the later part of the 19th Century through to the early 20th Century.

The Japanese mark reads: Ken 乾 in a styistic way on a piece of Arita ware.
This character "Ken" in Japanese is the 1st character of the name "Kenryu" 乾隆 (Qianlong), which stands for the Chinese Emperor Qianlong Period (1736-1795). The Ken marks were in use during the Edo Period from circa 1800 till the end of the Meiji Period, circa 1900.

Martin.

Thank you both for sharing your knowledge. I see the mark now on Gotheborg.

I need to pare down my accumulation of fifty years; experience has taught me not to part with something if I don’t know what it is, so I’m still hanging on to a lot of stuff.

Happy New Year!
