Subject:Burmese Buddha
Posted By: Wendy Dick Thu, Jul 07, 2022 IP: 108.216.164.221

Can anyone tell me about the Burmese Buddha I inherited? My mother purchased it in 2003 from Out of Asia, Ipswich, MA.

This seems to be a 19th century Burmese Mandalay-style carved wood(?) standing figure of the Sakyamuni Buddha with right hand in the Abhaya Mudra or posture of fearlessness and the left clutching the hem of his monk's robe. Perhaps was originally lacquered and gilded or painted.

Here also is a photo of standing and seated Mandalay Buddhas surrounded by acolytes with a central scrolling Burmese carved backdrop, all with intact gilding. The seated Buddha is in the Shan style. The Shan are native 'Tai' people who comprise much of the population across the Burmese border with Thailand and Laos.

Best Regards,

Bill H.
