Subject:Chinese clay teapot identification
Posted By: Fahre Sun, Nov 28, 2021 IP: 2a02:a03f:a04f:2500:

Hello, this morning I was able to acquire this pretty little clay teapot. I think she is Chinese.
Could you help me identify the marks.
There are 2, one under the base which is the square mark
The other is under the cover but is not very readable.
Do you think it dates from before 1900.
Thank you in advance. A good week

The six-character mark above reads down and across from the top right as "Yixing zisha minghu" (宜興紫砂名壺), Usually read as "Yixing purple sand famous pot". I believe the two-character mark is shown upside down. When flipped, the character lacks full definition but resembles the character "Cha" (茶) for "tea". I'm unsure about the second character.

I'll defer a more exact estimate of age to more astute collectors of Yixing wares than I am, while offering a guess of Republic to third quarter of the 20th century for this pot and showing photos of another style pot from my collection that appears to have been made for the Thai market and likely equipped with its Thai-style handle in a Bangkok shop specializing in such work. The handle and other bronze fittings seem to have a very natural patina that I'd say dates to the late 19th century, as probably does the base mark of "Gongju" (貢局) or "Best quality style" (Literally something worthy of being offered in tribute).

Best regards,

Bill H.
