Subject:Well Carved Soapstone Teapot, Marked
Posted By: Kevin Donnelley Fri, Oct 15, 2021 IP: 104.148.181.112

Hi All,

the details of this small teapot w/ its tree branch and bamboo leaf theme are well defined with crisp lines. The recessed foot shows a mark, and I have not found other pots like this one that also has a mark.
Hoping to learn a translation of the mark and whatever other information might be available on this type of work.
Longest Measure: 6 1/2"; 16.51 cm
thanks for looking.

Kind regards,

Kevin

this naturalistic stone example would appear to be a representation of the "Three Friends of Winter". Other teapots of this theme are readily found in Yixing reference material. And, while two of the "friends", bamboo and plumb blossoms, are clearly represented at the ends, the third, pine might be found in the bare stemmed branch at the base of the gnarled branch finial of the cover.
in those searches, pine might normally be found to be represented w/branches of rounded needle groups . However, the representation to this third friend might be more similar to their depiction in the Zeng Xi painting of the same theme.
a link is provided below to the Christie's site where the painting was sold in their Nov 2014 sale
