Subject:Help Identifying a Chinese bowl
Posted By: George Wed, Nov 15, 2023 IP: 107.159.216.138

Hello,

I'm having trouble finding this mark. I believe it to be chinese nyonya? Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

The mark, which is written in an added square frame within the double circle, is the character "Bao" (寳), rendered in seal script and having the root meaning of "Treasure".

You're correct in calling the plate "Nyonya" or "Nonya" and made for the Straits Chinese market. The piece appears to date to the mid-to-late 20th century, as compared to the late 19th century bowls in my photos below.

Best regards,

Bill H.

The mark is a highly stylised form, almost cartoonish, of the character for Treasure - 寶
