Subject:Toyokuni III kojo surimono-type print
Posted By: Tom Aspden Sat, Oct 21, 2023 IP: 146.199.136.223

Hi,

I have this print of Danjuro VIII (I presume) making a speech with Iwai Kumesaburo and another Ichikawa actor. I realised it uses some metallic pigments in the sword fittings and the very faint text that is printed on the blue background. I wondered if it was possible to glean any information about the prints from what is legible when a light is shone across the text? I thought it was maybe a new years print as the fern decoration is similar to a Hiroshige New Year surimono of Danjuro VII.

Also there appears to be a strange symbol in the top left of picture 3 which doesn't look like a japanese character?

I realise discerning certain bits will be quite difficult, so there no need to struggle with those!

Thanks for your time and input!

Tom

Sorry, don't know why last photo is the weird shape, here should be one with better dimensions!
