Subject:Bronze Buddha Head
Posted By: jeff sutton Tue, May 16, 2023 IP: 2600:6c67:2cf0:c10:5

Hello, I picked up this and was wondering about age but I know that is hard to tell from pictures alone. I was wondering if anyone knew about the bar connection on the underside as well. It is a touch over 11" and weighs about 4 pounds or so.

This is a votive image of the Buddha from Thailand, which in my opinion was given an acid induced Patina and sold to souvenir-hungry tourists and western military personnel who visited that country during the Vietnam War years (3rd quarter of the 20th century). Bronze Buddha images like this for home altar worship in Thailand sometimes show traces of gold leaf but even lacking gilt were ritually bathed enough that they darkened naturally in time instead of turning so green.

Best regards,

Bill H

Thanks Bill! I am certainly not well versed but if done in the 60's or 70's they did a great job. I picked it up for around $100 in a donation store and they knew nothing about it. I'll add pictures of the inside and some macro to check out - there is a piece of rusted wire that looks to have been hung into the top perhaps to attach it to something at some point in time. I also do see, what to my eye appear to be, just a couple flecks left from guilding on the top. Thanks for taking the time to share knowledge Bill. Best Regards!
