The artist is Otake Kunikazu (尾竹国一, 1868-1931) depicting the actor Nakamura Fukusuke IV (中村福助, 1865-1940)) in the role of Chūjō-hime (中将姬). Kabuki play 'Hibariyama hime sutematsu' (雲山姫捨松) performed at the Nakamura-za, Tokyo, October 1887.

Guy.

Dear I. Nagy and Guy Sun (and others)

I’m rather new to collecting Asian art and thus a novice, this print is my first Ukiyo-e print. I wanted to ask, is it common that such prints depicting Kabuki plays were produced around the same time as the plays they are depicting? For example, the play depicted in my print was given in 1887, is it then a fair guess that it was printed around that same time or is it more likely/common that it is a later print/reprint? I realize that estimating the production year of art can be very tricky and that each pice has to be individually judged but wanted to ask if you have any general thoughts on this mater?

Best regards
Joakim

These prints are like movie or circus posters. They are used to advertise the event and, thus, are printed around the time of the performance.

Cheers,
Stan
