Subject:Help with Kutani teapot mark
Posted By: Martin Michels Tue, Jan 03, 2023 IP: 2001:1c03:58c3:3f00:

I found this Kutani teapot with a mark I do not quite understand. It looks that it says 屮右 (Teyu) ???
Literally meaning "left hand - right" ???
This combination of Kanji is not found in the Japanese names dictionaries, so does someone have any idea what it means or did I make a mistake in the interpretation of this mark?
Thank in advance.
Martin.

While we both await I.Nagy's expert input, the mark reads down in two characters as 屮右, machine translation "right hand". Japanese readings are:

Japanese Kun HIDARI HIDARITE
Japanese On SA
Chinese meaning "Sprouting plants.

Japanese Kun MIGI TASUKERU
Japanese On U YUU
Chinese meaning Right hand

The Unihan data base doesn't show a printable character in the radical form, but below is a screen print:

Best wishes,

Bill H.

The answer is quite simple.
These are two characters written continuously;
山名 Yamana - Surname
The horizontal part of the second stroke of 名 character was omitted.

With regards,
I.Nagy
