Subject:original utamaro print
Posted By: Francis Thu, Dec 29, 2022 IP: 2a01:e0a:871:8270:71

I just bought this small (chuban) print. The signature seems to be utamaro ga, but I did not find another copy or a similar print in the internet base of utamaro's works. Can you confirm it is utamaro's signature? If not, who could be the artist?
Thanks a lot.

Sorry, my mistake: my print has the yotsugiri size (half chuban), a rather rare size.

This looks like an ehon (book) page to me. You are saying that it is about 5 X 7 inches. We have a number of ehon pages that are about 6 X 9 inches. Some have been trimmed to smaller sizes (5 X 9 in one case). See a couple of examples below that are believed to be from a Hokusai ehon. I virtually combined two pages across the spine to form one image. I also joined 3 pages to form a continuous image.

Cheers,
Stan

It certainly looks like it reads utamaro, and my guess is that it's original, the paper looks to be a couple of hundred years old too, based off of my own prints of similar age
