Subject:kutani or satsuma tea service?
Posted By: Rodolphe Sun, Nov 20, 2022 IP: 2a02:a03f:a2ee:9d00:

Hello,

could you help me identify if the 2 pieces are kutani or satsuma type and translate the red mark under the base - both are signed +- in the same way.
Thanks

The mark shown here reads "Made by Watano". The first Watano porcelain business was established around 1860 in the late Edo period by Watano Genuemon (綿野 源右衛門) an ex-samurai turned merchant whose first commercial venture was a shop in Terai, a town in Nomi District of Ishikawa Prefecture. He opened a branch dealing in porcelain in Kobe in 1876 called the Watano Shoten (綿野商店), "Shoten" meaning "shop". Pieces signed "Made by Watano" (綿埜製 - Watano sei) belong to this period. Besides the characters 綿埜, some of these pieces also bear a Kutani Mark. Some of this info is is based on findings at the following website:

The mark reads: Watano 綿埜 Sei 製 (Made by Watano).
Mark might be of Watano Genuemon or his son Watano Kichiji. It's Kutani ware from 1900-1925.
Regards,
Martin.
