Posted By: Mandi Sat, Sep 03, 2022 IP: 173.19.191.36

I am looking for any help with identification of age and artist. Thank you!

Based on subject (bijin-ga; translates roughly to 'pictures of beautiful women') and style this looks somewhat like a woodblock print in the manner of / after Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806), but It doesn't appear to be his signature and seal (the seal and signature can be found on the righthand-side next to the women). Unfortunately, the resolution is not too good, which makes it difficult to recognise the signature. It might be better to attach a new picture with a larger image of the signature. To me it looks more like Mid 20th century, but it's hard to tell from that picture.

Regards
Madria

I still could not identify the author, sorry. You might ask Bill or I.Nagy here in the forum for help. For comparison I attach you a link to Chrstie's current japan-auction (20991) with Bijin ga by Kitagawa Utamaro. They clearly deviate in style from the artist of your print. I regret that I cannot be of further help but I would be very interested in any future findings.

[You have to scroll down and click on the load all button. Afterwards you have to – you guessed it – scroll down further. Alternatively, you can use the search function on Christie's website.]

with regards

Madria

Dear Mandi,
One thing is sure that the signature reads,
静山 - Seizan
The seal underneath is unintelligible to me.
I also found two Seizans with Hosogai (細貝)and Tadokoro (田所) surnames from the end of Edo period
which I cannot identify in the absence of reference pictures.

With regards,
I.Nagy

this does not look like a print to me but handpainted. It also looks more modern.
