Subject:Help Translating Hanko? Stamp
Posted By: Scott Powell Wed, Dec 29, 2021 IP: 2600:8805:4a06:7500:

I was wondering if you or anyone you may know, can translate a Hanko Stamp for me?

I have a piece of beautiful pottery that has a red Hanko Stamp on the bottom. I am big on finding out the history of things and I would like to see if this has a story behind it. What makes this piece so unique to me is that it was crudely turned into a lamp at some point in it's life and when I took the lamp parts off to display the pottery it had a red Hanko stamp that was hidden on the bottom because of the lamp parts. It was very obvious to me it was turned into a lamp way later.

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated

The marking reads,
1, 麗 - Li - Chinese surname
2, 麗 - Ryo - another (historic) name for 高麗 Goryo (Korea)

With regards,

I also had someone send me this... They mentioned Kanji?

But your translation is the first that says names. And I thank you so much for that. Your translation is the direction I am trying find out... Names.

This link someone sent me seems to have the same marking but reads as a description.

Dear Scott,
Kanji (Japanese) Hanzi (Chinese) Hanja (Korean) and Han tu (Vietnamese)
"漢字", meaning "Han (dynasty) words" (characters) are all the same, just in different languages.
The information sent to you is an excerpt from a Japanese dictionary. In Japanese, unlike in Chinese, this character is not used for proper names (surnames)
In Chinese the character 麗 "li" has the following meanings;
Adjective; beautiful, magnificent, elegant, pretty
Verb (Literary): depend on, attach onself to
Noun; Li ( a surname)
