Subject:Dating Chinese silver opium box
Posted By: Mark DeBono Sun, Nov 07, 2021 IP: 2001:8003:5923:4100:

Hi, I’m trying to date what I think is a small Chinese silver opium box. It has raised images of two immortals playing writing and the board and pieces have been spilled or tossed in the air. On the other side I think it is an immortal straddling some sort of scaled animal. There is a makers mark on the bottom but it looks like it may have been over stamped. There is also a raise form on the lid. The raised images are solid, not repousse. Any additional information would be much appreciated. Thank you.

When you said "playing writing" I suppose the dreaded automatic spell correcter changed "writing" from WeiQi 圍碁 (in Japanese 'Go'), as that certainly looks like the game they were playing. And it is not unknown for a player loosing the game to tip the board up, spilling the pieces. But that is very bad form.
