Subject:Ivory carving small figure
Posted By: Tom Sun, Jul 25, 2021 IP: 41.246.28.4

Hi Asian Arts Forum

I have four small (4cm x 2.5cm) ivory figures which I would like to know who the artist is. If anyone knows who the artist is, please let me know.

They were bought from China/Japan by my great great grandfather who worked as a ship merchant.

Thank you

Hi,

What you have there is a Japanese netsuke dating to the late 19th/early 20th century.

Yours is a nice example depicting a merchant. I can't give you a precise maker as netsuke as they were mass produced items used to help hang things around the belt (obi) of a man as kimono have no pockets.

Regards,

Could it be that you made a slight mistake, I think that your story does not match those carvings
