Subject:Netsuke Rat Catcher & Signature Identification
Posted By: Lisa F. Mon, May 31, 2021 IP: 2601:2c5:8200:b920:d

A friend purchased this Netsuke (Okimono-type ???) rat-catcher in an antique store. I would like to identify the signature and if this is a legitimate piece of Netsuke or "tourist netsuke"/NLO.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!

Hi Lisa,
Your friend has bought a ivory netsuke.
In my opinion it's a genuine example from the Meiji period 1868-1912.
It's a very unusual carving. Unfortunately I can't read the mark so perhaps others can assist you.
Regards,

Mark reads,
岡田 - Okada

To piggyback on the good information Mark provided...

Note the wear at the edges of the Himotoshi (holes) where the cord is attached. This is an indication that the netsuke was used for some time.

Cheers,
Stan
