Subject:Japanese Plates ID
Posted By: Peter Sat, May 29, 2021 IP: 178.115.128.48

I've just acquired a pair of Satsuma plates and would be grateful if anyone were able to translate the markings on the reverse.

Many thanks !

The mark reads: Nippon 日本 - Kyoto 京都 - Nishida 西田 Zo 造 (Japan - Kyoto - Made by Nishida).

It's a mark of Nishida Itaro, who had a studio in the Gojozaka area of Kyoto and was known for his Kyoto Satsuma in the late Meiji / Taisho period (1880-1925). He produced mainly export Satsuma items for export.

Regards,
Martin.
