Subject:Help with hand painted mark on Satsuma figure
Posted By: Ian E Sat, Mar 06, 2021 IP: 86.0.150.215

I have been stumped with the mark on this Satsuma ware figure, hand scripted in iron red. The figure is early 20th century with moriage detail and a gilt base. Any help much appreciated, thank you.

The mark reads: Kusube 楠部.
It's a typical mark of Yaichi Kusube (1897-1984), a renowned Kyoto style Satsuma ceramist.
He used this mark as well as before as after WW2. In the Showa Period after the WW2, 2 great potter-artists, Ito Tozan and Kusube Yaichi were the main members of Nitten, the most popular of all the great art organizations in Japan.
Without pictures of the object itself it's impossible to say something about age.
Regards,
Martin.

Hi Martin,

Many thanks, I have some work by Kusube, however the marks are much more legible on those I already have. Now you have posted I can see it fits, but was struggling on my own. The figure is a porcelain bodied man with moriage and gilt and is almost certainly very late Meiji, it isn't an exciting or valuable item, more academic interest as I find it very frustrating not to be able to catalogue something.

Again thank you for your kind help.

Hai Ian,
If it's really late Meiji, then it must be a piece by the father of Yaichi : Sennosuke 千之助 Kusube (1859-1941).
Both artists used almost the same marks.
Martin.
