Subject:Transcription of Ito Chuta Sketch 482
Posted By: Irwin Sat, Jul 04, 2026 IP: 174.127.209.134

The attached sketch by Itō Chūta titled Struggle Between Blacks and Whites in America (米國黑白爭鬪) was drawn following large-scale clashes between whites and Blacks in Washington and Chicago in late July-early August, 1919. The commentary by Ayai Tadahiko (綾井忠彦) signing as 無墨園 (Mobukuen?) appears to be a dialogue between the yellow-skinned (黄色?) and brown-skinned (偈觀?) figures watching the fight between and a black and a white cat. Any assistance in transcribing the dialogue and the signature of Ayai, would be very helpful. With thanks.

“Are you on blacks'side、too,

“Even though whites were originally just freeloaders in your place, they've gotten cocky lately and have been arbitrarily bullying people, so I’m strongly advocating for racial equality.

“You idiot. You’re all only talking.”
