Subject:Fukagawa China
Posted By: Doug Tue, Jan 31, 2017 IP: 173.240.39.24

I inherited a very extensive set of china that belonged to my great grandmother. I have determined that they are Fukagawa and probably Fukagawa Seiji. I have found similar patterns by doing google searches but not exact. The pictures attached don't do them justice. Can anyone tell me anything more about this beautiful Japanese porcelain?

The website gotheborg.com attributes this mark of "Fukagawa Sei" (深川製 - "Made by Fukagawa") to the 1900-1920 period, which indeed ensued the establishment of Fukagawa Seiji in 1894.

A glance at the replacements.com list for Fukagawa dishes didn't turn up a pattern match for yours, though quite a few patterns had no accompanying pictures. I know that Fukagawa made quite a few dishes and decorative porcelains that were sold though American military exchanges in the third quarter of the 20th century. Many had the same mark, but not hand-written, as yours appears to be. Since the stamped or transfer-applied marks generally were a sign of later manufacture, it would seem that your great-grandmother's set probably was acquired before World War II. However, if your great-grandfather served in the Korean War (1950-53), then it's possible that the dishes could have been acquired in Japan around that era.

Best regards,

Bill H.

You might check with this company in Japan. I bought a pair of cups from them in this design and they may be able to find the information for you. I believe the pattern is Sea Anemone. Good luck.

Thanks for your input. I went ahead and contacted an appraiser and got some very good information. The pieces are in fact Fukagawa from the 1890 - 1935 period. The appraiser thinks around 1910 which makes sense. My great Grandparents were married in 1915.

Bill H. I have not been able to find a pattern match either. I have looked all over and have only found similar pieces that were made way more recently. I can't be the only person with this pattern so I will keep looking but I am not going to hold my breath LOL
