Subject:Jade seal - translation of script.
Posted By: Corey Mon, Jan 06, 2014 IP: 193.169.154.71

Got this chinese jade seal that probably dates to the 18th-19th century. If someone here could translate the scripture, it would be awesome.

It's a 'two-in-one' seal btw. The smaller round seal is placed inside a hole of the larger squarish seal. The material is khotan jade.

These are pretty common in antique shops in Singapore. Skeptical about the claim that this is khotan jade.

Hi, Corey:

How did you decide the material of your seals are Hetian (Khotan) nephrite jade? They do not look like Hetian jade to me. Have you tested to see if they were even made of nephrite because nephrite was really not the best material for seals making.

Also, it is impossible to tell the real colors of your seals. It will be best to take pictures under natural sunlight on top of a piece of white paper.

May be mikeoz or others will translate them for you. It is really too much works to translate such pieces especially I do not believe they are really that old based on their material and appearances. Of course I can be wrong and others can shed some light.

Cheers.

Super

I'm pretty sure the material is nephrite jade although I haven't made any testing of it exept scratch. I say khotan jade because its color and a slightly greasy feel. The color is light gray with two orange bands and a few rare lavender spots. It look way better in natural sunlght. It's rather opaque material though.

I bought it because I liked the script and because of the material. Together they weigt 920 grams - almost one kilo. If khotan jade in this quality is valuable I don't know.

The quality of the workmanship is quite average, exept for an ugly ridge in the bottom of the hole where the smaller seal is placed.

I have no reason to doubt that the seal is actually 19th century or older.

With chinese antiques you have to remember they are still the most abundant antiques in the world even despite the great loss during the cultural revolution.

BUT if someone here could identify the type of characters it would be a great help.
