Posted By: antigone Mon, Nov 16, 2020 IP: 2a01:cb10:360:ef00:5

Hello, I have this old man from Vietnam, made in Bien Hoa, with a road and a fruit : a peach?
he is 55 cm high,
I think it might be 20 years old,
Who is he? I was trying to search : Confusius? a wise old man? a god?

Thank you for your help in advance,
Sincerely,
Antigone

This is a Vietnamese rendition of the Chinese God of Long Life. I'm unsure of what the name is in Vietnamese, but it's Shoulao in Mandarin. I'd speculate it might have been made and sold during the 3rd quarter of the 20th century, Vietnam War period. Lots of Vietnamese ceramics came out of Vietnam at that time with personnel assigned there with military forces.

Best regards,

Bill H.

The figure is representing Shouxing 壽星、one the three star gods, who is believed to control the life spans of mortals. He is recognized by his his high domed forehead and the peach which he carries as a symbol of immortability.

With regards,
I.Nagy
