Hi all, I’m just starting to appreciate and admire some of the Asian art and came across this at an estate sale. Does anyone recognize what this is? Is it authentic Karansha? Is it antique?

The vase indeed does have the mark and appearance of authentic Koransha ware in the palette that many call "Chocolate Imari", made around the last quarter of the 19th century. Here are a couple of other such Koransha wares that have come into my collection, first a previously lamped jar, which is hard to beat for sheer glamour, unless its by the second item, an imposing tea infuser or coffee urn with the chocolate color a prominent ground amidst the swirling brocades, as well as the birds and dragons painted therein.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Michelle,
It would appear from your pictures that your vase bears the mark of koransha.
The scented red rose was used by Fukagawa company in the late 19th century. The company is still in operation today.
Without going into the full history here you can if so inclined to do so by searching via Google Fukagawa Koransha.
Nice vase.

I've not heard anything about a 'Scented Red Rose' in conjunction with the Fukagawa Company, but 'Koransha' (香蘭社) means the 'Fragrant Orchid Company', which some call 'Scented Orchid Company'.

Hi Bill H,
You are absolutely correct. My mistake. It was very late at night when I posted.
