This enormous painting likely was a central icon in a monastic setting. The central figure of Shakyamuni is surrounded by various other divinities as well as the figures of the 16 arhats, or "achieved ones" the original dsciples of the Buddha who achieved enlightenment. The painting was in a private collection on the West Coast for many years. |
