Trying to find out more about an old Chinese carpet that features eight dragons each with 3 claws.
Close-up photo enclosed of one of the dragons. Such dragon motives usually feature 4 or 5 clawed beast - 3 claws is rare. In fact, first time I am seeing a 3 clawed dragon, in a carpet or otherwise.
Online, I found one reference to a "water dragon" (one of the elements) having three claws and also Japanese dragons have 3 claws - while this rug is Chinese and old (acquired by the current owner in 1955 and probably older than that).
Any insights are much appreciated on the three claws. Also, does this point to any specific origin and perhaps also age etc. etc.
Thanks much the help!
