Large Bronze ... Oni? I think?

Hello,
I have a few items that I don't know much about and am finally trying to do some research. I hope you can steer me in the right direction. Thank you in advance!
I believe this is 1/2 of a large Bronze Oni Statue that we purchased from a garage sale years ago. The Base is approximately 20" across (round) x 24" Tall. Weight has to be 60-80lbs. I don't see any makers marks.
Obviously he is missing something... a bowl? a Bell of some sort? Doesn't matter, he's Awesome, but I would like to know what he originally was holding. Is he indeed an Oni statue or is there a more appropriate name for this piece? His approximate age. What is his significance? Where would he be found? in a home... temple etc.? General information would be nice to know. Just about everyone that comes to our home for the first time asks and I stand there looking like an idiot knowing virtually nothing about him lol.
