Subject:Meaning of the term "林某"
Posted By: Irwin Sun, May 19, 2024 IP: 174.127.209.134

Hi,
I sometimes see the term "林某" used a a placeholder when a publisher's name is not known. Any information about the use of this term would be appreciated along with confirmation that its use does in fact indicate an unknown publisher.
With thanks,
Irwin

not sure it relates to publishing specifically, I think X-某 or X-某某 is used simply as "So and so" might be used in English, as a placeholder for an individual the speaker can't specifically name (or doesn't need to in order to convey a point). Speculating now but perhaps 林 functions as a stand-in for surnames, since it's relatively a common one (but 王 or 李 are more common, so perhaps it refers to a specific anecdote about someone with the surname Lin). looking forward to others' contributions
