Subject:Nephrite? Bangle with Fu Lu Shou Characters Carving
Posted By: Annabelle Wed, Sep 02, 2015 IP: 24.4.26.88

Hello Forum Members,

Hope I don't take much of your time, but I have this bangle with carvings of 3 plaques around the bangle of characters Fu Lu Shou and interlocking scrolls on top and bottom edges of the bangle. Did scratch test (no scratches). Very, very smooth.

Please take a look at the pictures and let me know what you think of it: is it nephrite? antiquity? Anything comes to mind.

Thank you for your time.
Annabelle

Sorry, no antique in this case...You have to wait app. 60 years for this to happen. Nephrite yes...about 40 years ago a large amount of bangles came to Vancouver BC, Nephrite,Jadeite Serpentine in an array of colors. most of them were large size.

Thanks for the info, Ernest.

I don't mind it being 40 years old/new. I just admire the labor on the interlocking scrolls - must have taken quite some time and planning to do it so well, and looks like all hand made. The surface is so smooth with so much luster I imagine it must take quite some time and labor...unless there's a short cut To get that kind of meticulous work done.

The workmanship is there, now all I need to confirm is the quality of the material.

Annabelle, I thought it was an attractive design as well. Large bangles never seem to go out of fashion, as they can be such dramatic accessories for those who know how to wear them.
If you have $120, the Gemmological Institute can do a thorough ID for you. They include an infrared spectrographic analysis, if I'm not mistaken, to remove all doubts about whether something might be "B" jade or worse. And certainly will distinguish between serpentine and nephrite.

Thanks, Beadiste! Glad I'm not the only one appreciating the design.

confirm the quality of the material.= = = =
That would be easy if you would reside or be in the greater Vancouver BC area.

I am glad Ernest had seen similar sized bangles because I really did not know what to make of it. I cannot recall ever seeing any Chinese ladies wearing any "jade" bangles similar to this one in color, size and material. It appears to be made of serpentine or at best agate or bowenite. It is really a bit grotesque to me, sorry! Most Chinese ladies would not wear big bangles like this, in this color and with all the three Fu Lu Shou characters on it. They usually wear thinner, smaller apple green jadeite bangles. I just hope you did not pay too much for it. No pun intended.

Thanks for the honest opinion, Super.

I bought the bangle because of the workmanship. I did try the "scratch test" but no mark left. It also has the high chime same as my other jadeite bangles. So I think it's jade, but not sure the quality. I bought it because of the unique design and workmanship that I have never seen on any jade bangles, at least through all the search on line. To be honest it comes in a pair and I paid $775 for each.
I am starting to doubt my decision. :(
