Subject:Japanese Cloisone Bronze Vase
Posted By: Bill Hornaday Sat, Apr 02, 2005

Can You help identify this vase. It was purchased in Japan in about 1900. In a letter from Gumps in San Francisco it was called a Teagon (?) Blood Vase

Allegedly the crest at the top is of Prince Takegoshi Riuyaku.

It does not have any signature, but original purchaser was told to was made by the developer of this red enamel which seems to be over gold foil. n It is about 15" tall.

Thanks in advance.

I think it is supposed to be Pigeon Blood, but this is less galssy red and more ochre than standard pigeon blood. The work is superb, much better than your average Japanese cloisonne. I would expect Namikawa studio or other high end maker ca 1900 - 1910. Is there a mark on the base or footring? Probably not gold foil, but often over a brass body. Part of this appears to be done in wireless technique and other parts in cloisonne.
