Subject:Antique Chinese Famille Rose (?) bowl
Posted By: Guy Wed, Jan 28, 2015 IP: 84.197.53.237 This Chinese bowl seems to be very old. Colors are green, yellow , brick red, white and black (sides) and a motif of what appear to be Buddhistic (?) figures and red coral (side) on the side. H 10 cm - W 17 cm and base 6 cm. Not signed. |

Posted By: Bill H Thu, Jan 29, 2015 This bowl was made in China for the Thai market in a "Bencharong" (5 colors) pattern featuring "Teppanom" (Angels) and "Norasingh" (Half-lion, half-human protective spirits), both of which figure into Thai Buddhist art. I don't collect Thai ceramics but saw enough when I used to work there to think this piece probably dates to the first quarter of the 19th century or earlier. |

Posted By: Bill H Fri, Jan 30, 2015 Thanks Wil, Mike and Didier. I yield to your more studied opinions regarding this bowl being made in Thailand and not in China. The Thai imported some Bencharong wares from China but also have a long history of making ceramics of their own. |
