Subject:Japanes Painting on Gold Foil
Posted By: Dave Boland Tue, Sep 10, 2013 IP: 68.84.176.148

I've been working on translating the name of the artist of this painting and also the date. I am a novice, so let me know how close I am.

Name: Harutada

Date: Genbun 1736 - 1740. Please let me know how close or wrong I am.

Dave

You don't say where you picked up your cited date, but there's no mention of Gembun or any other reign period in the inscription. The date 一九六七年二月十一日 is right out of the Western calendar, February 11, 1967. Although there are others who join the forum who are more astute in these matters than I can ever aspire to be, I see very little in the manner of stylistic clues in the depiction of this bird on a dogwood branch to distinguish it as Japanese as opposed to Chinese in origin. The artist's name as written on the canvas and seal, is quite common in China as Zhang Zhongqing (張忠青). I didn't find any conclusive indication in my cursory queries via Google that it belongs to any well-known Chinese or Japanese artist.

Good luck,

Bill H.
