Subject:20th Century Japanese Silk Painting: Can Anyone Identify the Signature?
Posted By: Marvin Arnold Wed, Oct 31, 2012 IP: 91.60.50.54

I wonder if anyone can identify the artist's signature or seal.

This is a family heirloom, bought in the 1950s in an art gallery in Naples. I'm curious about the artist's name...

Thank you very much.

PS: I hope the image links to photobucket work this way...

looks like the name is supposed to be Shuho (lit. beautiful peak).

Thank you very much for your reply! It's amazing how you were able to recognize the kanji from those quick brush strokes!

Unfortunately, there is a number of artists with the name Shuho, and neither's seal matches mine...

Ikegami Shuho (1874-1944)
Ishida Shuho
Yamakawa Shuho (1898-1944)

Thanks again, I'll see if I can find out more.

perhaps one of the experts on Japanese art will have some additional suggestions. It seems to me that your artist probably was working more recently than those you've listed above.
