Subject:Is this genuine Meiji Period Japanese Imari
Posted By: namofland Tue, Oct 23, 2012 IP: 68.50.246.186

I'd like to know if this double gourd vase is genuine Japanese Imari from the Meiji Period or if it looks fake and why.

If I may wax subjective, the cloud forms surrounding the dragon look to be painted a bit more in the Chinese than Japanese style, and the three female figures remind me of some seen several years ago on a not entirely successful Chinese attempt at reproducing a Japanese Imari barber's bowl. Also, I'm not sure how the dragon would complement decoration involving a feminine motif like this, but I wonder if it is another case of the fakester not being up on his iconography (as opposed to my own ignorance).

Best regards,

Bill H.
