Subject:'Made in Japan' Chawan - crackle celadon
Posted By: Pete Veilleux Tue, May 15, 2012 IP: 50.131.229.77

Hello. I found this beautiful bowl a while back and have not been able to identify the maker nor the age of it. It looks mingei oribe, but maybe production ware for export? this seems contradictory to me. Please help! thank you very much.

Mark indicates made 1950s-later for export.

Glaze could be partly iron-based like old greenwares called "celadon" by Westerners, but term not correct to use for this bowl glazes.

Do not recognize s-in-diamond factory mark.

Good luck,
Cal

thank you very much for your response. however, i've seen pieces marked w/ a similar 'made in japan' mark which date to 1905-1910. i believe that this piece dates to this earlier period. It was found in a root cellar in an old house which had been vacant since the 50s. nothing else in the room where it was found was younger than the 1920s. i could be mistaken, but i really don't think so. i'd love to hear other's opinions on this as well.

I think that this design is related to Oribe and i do think that this is a Chawan - Teabowl. any feedback?
