Subject:Can anyone date this vase?
Posted By: Rich Sat, Feb 25, 2012 IP: 75.97.59.22

I am wondering if anyone here can date this large chinese redware vase, it stands 18" tall, has a dragon on it, there is a small mark on the base but I have no clue what it is. Thank you very much for your help!!

That appears to be a Japanese terra cotta vase of a type called 'Tokoname', after the place in Japan associated with such products. Just a guess but it could be circa the Meiji period (1868-1912) or somewhat later. See wikipedia.org link below for further info on Tokoname the kiln town.

Best regards,

Thanks for the info, yeah I guess it could be that, I see pottery images of similiar style come up under Chinese redware but I also see the similarity with the Japanese stuff to. I dont know myself, I was just curious as this is the 1st one this type I came across here at the antique auctions in PA. Thanks again, have a great weekend!! Rich

I'm unsure of what the mark says, but its location on your vase is more in keeping with Japanese kiln practices than Chinese.
