Subject:Chinese vase from grandmother. Modern, or old?
Posted By: Nick Tue, Sep 07, 2010 IP: 173.79.234.5

I was cleaning out my late grandmother's porcelain cabinet and found this chinese vase.

Is this an old piece? or just modern art?

I realize it's difficult to tell from just two pictures, but are there some things that I can check to verify authenticity?

Or just by looking at it is it obvious that it's modern?

Arjan was on right track, I think.

The paper tag probably read "Stoneware / Made in __."

The word 'stoneware' is an alien term in China. It might have been used for export to European or USA department store, but not happily.

The tag looks in middle 20th-century style, possibly just before World War II.

I like the glaze, no matter where made.

Good luck,
Cal

Hello Nick.

Still no reactions so I post one (that sometimes triggers others).
I think your vase have some age. The mark is blurry and it looks like it's stamped. This gives me an indication for an age as late 19th. ct. as oldest. I think the first character reads " Zhong" so the two right characters could be " Zhong Guo " wich means China.

Regards,

Arjan
