Subject:porcelain tea pot
Posted By: rocco coliman Wed, Apr 21, 2010 IP: 79.0.221.101

I'd like to know something about a teapot I show pictures of. It is a bit in the style of Yixing but it is porcelain, decorated as onix imitation and has a peach shape and decoration in relief and also a very interesting craquelè.
I never found such a kind of teapot. Some expert is willing to tell me something about?
Thanks and best regards. Rocco

Hi Rocco,

Your pot resembles this one of mine in form but mine has a red glaze associated with the Shiwan (Shekwan) kilns near Guangzhou (Canton) and has a recessed center to its base. I'd guess mine to date to the early 20th century. I have another pot presumed to be Shiwan that's in the form of a pomegranate with the same kind of recessed center to the foot and a darker flambe purple glaze.

If your isn't a Shiwan pot, then I'd speculate it might be a Japanese product because of the flatter bottom, which I've seen on some Hirado figural teapots dating to around 1900. Most Yixing pots seem to me usually to bear some sort of factory or artisan marks.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks Bill for the quick reply to my post.
I never thought it could be japanese but it is fairly possible. I stand waiting for possible other opinions.

Best regards. Rocco C.
