Subject:A nice piece of jade
Posted By: Anthony J Allen Mon, Mar 15, 2010 IP: 121.72.5.36

I thought readers might like to see what I consider to be a nice piece of jade carving; probably 18th century, although the silver compact is early 20th century.

Just sold on eBay number 360241875414

This piece of silver work was also signed Sung, the same silversmith responsible for making the 7 piece condiment set using jade archer's rings, which I posted a couple of weeks ago.

Perhaps somebody could post the image, as the link I tried did not work.

Hi Tony,
This link should work, or at least it worked for me.
Cheers,

Thanks Bill,
It is interesting to compare this carving quality with that posted previously by KK, under the heading Tool marks on antique jades.

I agree that the carving is excellent, and as for age, the same company sells a Jade lock purported to be late Qing ($240). Please have a close look.
PS. I worry sometimes...

Subject:carving quality not alway have anything to do with authenticity

I agree this is a typical 18th Century style craving, dated to 18th to first half of 19th century with early 20th silver work. It is made from qingbai(celadron) hetian jade. The carving is good in today's standard. The general market appreciate this style today as many mid-Qing white jade are a lot more expensive than older Ming piece (Chudamin style). But this have nothing to do with authenticity. I think this is one of the common blind spot with many collectors here.

The other point is size matter: my pictures are enlarge to show tool marks, surface wear and stains etc... such as the above picture Tony pick show a area of little over 0.5 square inches. and while the picture of the jade/silver box is much smaller but it is 2.5 inches in height.

The interesting thing is most white hetian jade carvings from the past 10 years are better in quality comparing to many 18th century antique jades. I have a lot of pictures and I may do a separate thread about modern jade craving when I have time.

Ernest, look again. If you are comparing the white jade lock #360134713557, they are not sold by the same seller.

Anthony..that one I missed. However, my warning should be..beware, as this type of Jade has been recently used for carvings which are made to perfection. Only by going every year to China and Hong Kong one is better informed of modern material and workmanship.
